Christmas time is here again. It’s time for festive holiday parties, fun family gatherings, and last-minute shopping trips, but December also means snow and cold, so you never know what to expect when you get out on the roads. With all the extra driving you will be doing this holiday season, we wanted to remind you of a few things when you’re travelling this month:

  • Inspect your vehicle – it’s important to do a walk around your vehicle to visually inspect your tires and your lights. Make sure that your tires look properly inflated and that all of your exterior lights are working. Use a tire pressure gauge once every few weeks and before long trips to ensure that your tires are filled to the correct PSI. You should also check your oil to make sure that it is clean and full and check your windshield washer fluid reservoir to ensure it’s full as well.
  • Remove all the snow from your vehicle – if your vehicle is parked outside, make sure to remove all the snow from it. Leaving snow on your roof can cause a loss of visibility for you and the drivers around you if it flies off your vehicle. You should also make sure to remove snow that’s covering your license plate.
  • Watch gas prices – gas prices will tend to fluctuate drastically during the holiday season so use gas pricing apps to find the cheapest prices near you.
  • Plan your route – if you are travelling a long distance during the holidays, make sure to check road conditions, weather reports, and construction reports. If the weather may cause poor road conditions, make sure you know ahead of time so you can adjust your travel plans.
  • Pack an emergency kit – it’s a good idea to always have a winter emergency kit in your vehicle. It should contain a snow brush, an ice scraper, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, a flashlight, road flares, blankets, bottled water, a cell phone charger, a jack and tire wrench, booster cables, and hand warmers.
  • Get a good sleep – driving when you’re tired can decrease your reaction time and attention span as much as driving while impaired. Always get a good night’s rest before you drive, and if you feel tired, have someone else take the wheel or pull over safely to the side of the road and have a nap.
  • Have a designated driver – anytime you think you may be consuming alcohol or cannabis, always make sure to have a sober driver available to get you home. Taxis and ride share companies are very busy during the holidays so to avoid long wait times, plan for a safe ride home ahead of time.
  • When in doubt, visit your local Signature Tire – if you need any assistance with your vehicle over the holiday season, you can visit your local Signature Tire location for all your tire and automotive needs!
